I was looking back through the book and saw something from the first chapter that I liked. The question about what are some problems or oppertunites in your area/business. I think that there are many times that these can go hand in hand. I also belive that teh two are directly related. If you can come up with an oppertunity for people which also alleviates a problem you are having, you have a win/win situtaion. This affects my project in relation to the issue of minority recruitment within the college of agriculture. The oppertunity for students that college gives them is a great benefit to them. This would also benefit the college of agricutlure by increasing the diversity of our college.
Grant Update
Grant Update:
The Spencer Foundation Grant is coming along well. Working on the finishing touches for this grant. Looking for a 4 year project instead of the original 3 year time line. The grant has a specific budget format that they use, so I will use this and develop another for class if need be. I am excited about this grant as it relates to college recruitment and diversity in agriculture education, bith things that I would like to do research on and be involved in later on.
The other grant I am working on is with Mark Russell through the American Welding society. We are going to tweek this grant and try and run it through a couple of different sources; mikerower works foundation, USDA and possibly a state gratn proposal. The AWS side is for reserach and educational funding through a fellowship. This would focus on my continiung educaiton and the setting up of safety presentations for the Texas Career and Technology Educator Community. I will keep you updated on this as it comes to fruition.

Expanding Grant purpose and focus
I have been really trying to nail the grant purpose and scope before my letter is sent out. I have been collecting background numbers on minority enrollment. I believe it is also important to note the numbers of minorties in professional agriculture positions. Employment within the agriculture industry remains strong with a projected 52,000 annual job openings in 2010 (Goecker, Gilmore, Smtih and Smith, 2005). According to this report there will be only about 49,000 qualified graduates to fill these positions. With this info it is evident the need to produce more qualified graduates is high.
The National Academy of Science recently reported that Universitys with Agriculture and Food Sciences need to be more proactive in stregthening thier programs. There were six steps that the Academy suggested Universitys take to strengthen thier programs. These included:
1. Implement Strategic Planning- Colleges and Universitys should act strategically to recruit and retain students. The main goal should be to prepare them for the agriculture work force of tommorrow. In this planning should be steps to include a wide variety and diversity of students.
2. Broaden the Treatment of Agriculture- I took many interesting things from this idea. It is interesting how many cross content areas are covered in the foeld of agriculture, even at the High SChool level. Business, engineering, leadership, biology, they are all part of the curriculum to some extent. this is actually close to what I am doing my dissertation on.
3. Broaden the Student Experience- I believe that we are doing this by offering students courses in leadership and agriculture communications.
4. Build Stronger Connections Between Universitys- This focuses on institutions partnering to foster students learning within agriculture. Many universitys are sheltered or distant from one another. They all have the same goal- to help prepare the future leaders in agriculture.
5. Start Early- increasing student's awareness of agriculture and it's affects on student's lives early on can attract more people to agriculture careers. Colleges should reach out to students and teachers in grades K-12. I believe that this should go further to include administrators and counselors as well.
6. Build Academic Partnerships- Academic institutions should include representatives of business and other areas as well. This may lead to student's oppertunities in internships and jobs within the professional industry. I believe this can also include many Summer oppertunities and possibly job shadowing.
By putting these practices into place we can reach our goal of increased enrollment of students in Agriculture Science, especially those of underrepresented groups.

I have some dates set out for this proposal and possibly an abstract for it.
The dates would be from 9/1/2011 to 8/31/2014. This would allow for the oppertunity to deal with student specifically sophomores to seniors that would refelct the changes or influences in thier college choice that this program would bring upon them.
The purpose of this grant would be for student recruitment. Non-traditional and/or metropolitan students are less likely to have the oppertunity to understand and be exposed to careers in agriculture and natural resources. The project goal is to increase the recruitment strategies for inner city high school students. The objectives are to: Create interest and awarness of agriculture science in inner city hihgh school students, develop culturally appropriate recuritment strategies to educate and attract inner city high school students to agriculture science careers. Other goals include increasing college students abilities to teach others about agriculture, and to increase awarness of the career oppertunites avaiable to students through agriculture science to high school teachers, administrators and counselors.
A relationship shall be established between the university and several schools in a south Texas metroplex area.

Grant Ideas
The proposals that I would like to focus on would be in relation to agriculture education, and minority college recruitment. These are issues that I have the most experience in. I have had a hard time determining exactly where I would try and obtain funding for these topics. Any ideas that people can contricute would be very helpful.
